The Community Engagement Program works to create equity in the sport of hockey by making it more accessible and affordable for those who live in lower-income areas, as well as introducing hockey to people from all backgrounds. The program works to provide equipment, ice time and coaching for children who would not otherwise have access or be able to afford these resources. Through this program, children are learning the game of hockey, but they are also developing essential life skills such as commitment, perseverance and teamwork that will help them succeed both on and off the ice. By making hockey more accessible and providing opportunities for young people to learn the game and develop their skills, we can help break down barriers that have prevented many people from experiencing this great sport in Houston's atypical hockey market.
Community Engagement Program Initiatives:
OFF-ICE EQUIPMENT DONATIONS:
One of the biggest challenges that Houston faces in growing hockey is limited ice availability. The cost of reserving ice time for even a short period can be very expensive and prohibitive for those who want to try out hockey or play more frequently. To address this challenge, HYHG's mission is to begin donating dry land hockey equipment to schools, community centers, after-school programs, and sports complexes so they can experience the sport without having to pay high costs associated with booking ice time. By providing these facilities with hockey equipment, it allows people to practice and develop their skills on a regular basis no matter where they are located. Furthermore, when individuals get comfortable playing on dry land surfaces then transitioning them onto the actual rink will be much easier and less intimidating which will inturn, help the game of hockey to expand and grow in Houston.
